On August 28, OpenAI formally informed SpaceX of its intention to discontinue model services to Cursor, a company acquired by SpaceX, effective November 12, 2026. This date represents the maximum notice period stipulated by their contract. The decision to terminate services was not prompted by any misconduct on Cursor’s part. Instead, it arose from OpenAI’s skepticism regarding SpaceX’s commitment to using the technology in a compliant manner, a concern fueled by previous instances of non-compliance observed in companies led by Musk. Furthermore, OpenAI is gearing up to introduce a new model, Astra. To maintain stringent adherence to compliance standards, OpenAI has opted not to extend access to this or any future new models to Cursor. Nevertheless, Cursor retains the option to leverage alternative models, including those developed by Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI.
