Following its acquisition by SpaceX, OpenAI has revealed plans to discontinue model provision to Cursor from November 12 onwards, ceasing the supply of new models entirely. OpenAI clarified that this strategic move is driven by three main factors:
1. Contractual Change-of-Control Clause: The acquisition triggered a predefined clause in the contract, necessitating the termination of the agreement.
2. Trust Concerns Over Technology Compliance: OpenAI harbors reservations about the compliant utilization of its technology by entities affiliated with Musk.
3. Commercial Rivalry: SpaceXAI, the parent company of Cursor, has emerged as a direct contender to OpenAI in the realms of foundational models and Coding Agents, intensifying market competition.
Faced with the dual challenges of restricted access to external model resources and direct competition from its former supplier, Cursor had proactively ramped up efforts to enhance its in-house model, Composer. Additionally, driven by the need for expanded computational capabilities, Cursor agreed to the acquisition by SpaceX. Together, they have rolled out versions Grok 4.5 and 4.6. Nevertheless, Cursor continues to grapple with internal integration hurdles, particularly due to the overlapping functionalities between its Composer team and xAI's Grok team. SpaceX has proposed merging Cursor into SpaceXAI, yet the specifics regarding the allocation of future R&D resources and the planning of model development roadmaps remain ambiguous. The withdrawal of OpenAI has undoubtedly heightened the urgency to resolve these issues.
