On August 27th, Anthropic and Nscale reached a six-year agreement, under which Anthropic will pay $45 billion to rent approximately 460 megawatts of AI computing power from Nscale's Monarch data center in West Virginia. According to sources familiar with the matter, Nscale will use Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips, which are expected to be operational by the end of next year. The Monarch campus has a total planned capacity of about 1.35 gigawatts, with a total investment of approximately $71 billion, of which about $47 billion will be used for AI chips, and the remaining facilities will begin providing computing power in 2028. The project was originally planned to be leased by Microsoft, but after Microsoft withdrew this summer, Anthropic became the new tenant. Additionally, in recent months, Anthropic has also signed computing power agreements worth $50 billion, $10 billion, and $45 billion with Fluidstack, Volta Infra, and SpaceX, respectively, to secure more computing resources ahead of its IPO.
