On August 26, according to The Wall Street Journal, Chris Malone, the executive in charge of data center construction and expansion at OpenAI, left the company last week. Malone joined OpenAI in March 2025 and was responsible for data center construction related to the 'Stargate' project, a collaborative effort by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. According to sources familiar with the matter, the initial progress of the Stargate project was not smooth, prompting OpenAI to subsequently decide to collaborate with cloud service providers and restart its internal infrastructure development by leasing complete data center facilities. Currently, related work has been taken over by other executives. Malone's departure comes amid a period of leadership restructuring at OpenAI, as the company prepares for an anticipated IPO in 2027. Recently, several executives have left OpenAI, including Chief Revenue Officer Dennis Drescher, Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap, and Fidji Simo. Additionally, OpenAI is increasing its investment in computing power, with an expected expenditure on computing infrastructure reaching approximately $750 billion by 2030, up from the previous estimate of around $600 billion.
