NVIDIA has made a substantial $6 billion investment in the open-source model domain, allocating $1 billion to the AI startup Poolside and securing non-exclusive rights to its cutting-edge 'model factory' technology. Additionally, the company intends to integrate over 100 of Poolside's engineers into its workforce, with the ambition of vying for the title of the world's most potent open-source model. Previously, NVIDIA unveiled the Nemotron 3 series of open-source models and founded the Nemotron Alliance. Moreover, it has implemented open-source models across diverse sectors, including robotics and physical simulation. Poolside had encountered challenges as project partners withdrew and financing efforts faltered. However, its efficient 'model factory' system piqued NVIDIA's interest. Following the collaboration, only three key team members remain at Poolside. NVIDIA's approach utilizes a non-direct acquisition strategy to sidestep antitrust scrutiny, with its open-source strategy designed to propel the expansion of the AI ecosystem and, in turn, fuel demand for its own chip computing capabilities.
