On August 23, Chen Maobo, the Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, highlighted in his blog that the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) sector is providing a robust boost to Hong Kong's economy and consumer market. The HKSAR government is actively championing the widespread integration of AI across diverse sectors.
Chen Maobo emphasized that AI development has played a pivotal role in bolstering Hong Kong's economy and financial market. Fueled by robust global demand for AI products, Hong Kong's exports have sustained high double-digit growth over several consecutive quarters. In the capital market, from December of the previous year to May of the current year, the fundraising from newly listed AI-related stocks in Hong Kong soared to nearly HK$100 billion, representing approximately 55% of the total funds raised during the same period. Furthermore, Hang Seng Indexes Company has recently incorporated several AI companies into its indices, underscoring their significant economic impact.
Research reports forecast that if the AI adoption rate among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Hong Kong matches that of large enterprises by 2035, it could unlock economic benefits of up to HK$65 billion. Moreover, the HKSAR government is leveraging AI extensively to enhance operational efficiency, having already launched 30 efficiency-improvement projects across 13 departments.
