The South Korean government has embarked on extensive new investment initiatives, encompassing semiconductor clusters and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Consequently, it has substantially revised its projection for the peak electricity demand in 2040, now estimating it to reach 165 GW. This marks a notable increase of up to 26.8 GW compared to the previous forecast. Specifically, the peak electricity demand attributed to data centers in 2040 is anticipated to hit 14.2 GW, reflecting an additional demand of 11.9 GW. This represents a significant surge of 7.9 GW from the earlier forecast of 4.0 GW. Furthermore, the net growth in electricity consumption has also witnessed a more than threefold rise, escalating from the previously estimated 26.5 TWh to a staggering 84.9 TWh.
