Low-quality AI-generated content is flooding major tech platforms, polluting the information ecosystem. Several companies in Silicon Valley have begun cleaning up such low-quality, easily spreadable content by taking measures like deleting violating content, adding reporting buttons, utilizing AI detection, and involving users in identification. However, many platforms attempting to govern AI-generated garbage are precisely the sources of such content. AI garbage once boosted user engagement but has now become a burden. Current governance efforts carry the risk of misjudgment, and the issue of AI garbage reflects systemic challenges in the information environment. Platforms that mishandle it may face user attrition.
