According to the latest report released by Hugging Face, the world's premier AI open-source platform, the global open-source artificial intelligence ecosystem is undergoing rapid expansion, with Chinese models emerging as a formidable and influential force. The report underscores that, since 2026, in the majority of months, the largest open-source models unveiled by Chinese AI companies have substantially outstripped their U.S. counterparts in terms of parameter scale. The monthly upper echelon of Chinese models boasts parameter counts ranging from 754 billion to a staggering 2.78 trillion, whereas U.S. models have, for the most part, remained below the 130 billion parameter mark during the same timeframe.
Furthermore, Chinese models have demonstrated exceptional prowess in fostering open ecosystems. Data from Hugging Face indicates that over 80% of Chinese models boasting more than 20 billion parameters are licensed under permissive agreements, facilitating secondary development and commercial utilization. In a notable development, Qwen has cemented its position as a cornerstone model within Hugging Face's open-source ecosystem, with an impressive tally of over 150,000 derivative models built upon its foundation, significantly outpacing rivals such as Google and Meta.
