On the evening of August 14, Alibaba's Qianwen made a significant announcement—the open-sourcing of the Qwen3.8 series models. This move grants developers, research institutions, and enterprises around the world unrestricted access to download, deploy, and utilize these models. Notably, the newly open-sourced Qwen3.8-27B, a native multimodal dense model, boasts only 27 billion parameters yet surpasses the performance of Qwen3.7-Plus, especially excelling in programming and office-related tasks. Earlier, the flagship model Qwen3.8-Max had also been made open-source. Based on publicly accessible data, Alibaba has contributed over 460 models to the global AI community through open-sourcing. The Qwen model, in particular, has amassed over 3 billion downloads worldwide and given rise to more than 300,000 derivative models, solidifying its status as the premier open-source model on a global scale.
