On August 14, 2026, SpaceX officially wrapped up its acquisition of AI programming startup Cursor, sealing the deal at a staggering valuation of US$60 billion, all paid in stock. The acquisition journey commenced in April 2026, when the two entities unveiled a partnership aimed at expediting model training. Fast forward two months, and SpaceX formally gave the green light to the acquisition. Cursor shareholders were rewarded with roughly 389 million shares of SpaceX Class A common stock. Vested restricted stock units were transformed into about 1.75 million shares, while unvested restricted stock units and stock options were converted into approximately 29.13 million and 44.37 million shares, respectively. This strategic move marks a pivotal moment for Musk in his quest to bridge the gap with formidable rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI.
