On August 14, Reuters, citing three well-informed sources, revealed that Apple has crafted a unique large language model tailored specifically for the Chinese market. Historically, Apple has predominantly depended on third-party models to underpin its AI capabilities within the Chinese market. However, this time, it has opted for a distinct approach. Reports indicate that this model was co-developed by Apple and Alibaba, with training facilitated by Alibaba—a development that has remained under wraps until now. Previously, Apple had a tendency to utilize models sourced from local Chinese partners to integrate generative AI functionalities into devices like iPhones sold in China. At present, both Apple and Alibaba have refrained from commenting on this matter. According to the sources, Apple's AI toolkit, Apple Intelligence, is anticipated to make its debut in the Chinese market in the upcoming months, following an iOS system update.
