On August 13, WIRED, a renowned US technology media outlet, reported, citing informed sources, that the Trump administration's updated artificial intelligence guidelines are set to broaden regulatory oversight to encompass AI models. The White House revealed this month that it has formulated an AI framework mandating that cutting-edge AI models, crafted by US laboratories, must undergo rigorous safety evaluations by the federal government prior to their public release. As of now, the framework remains undisclosed, and no official public plan has been unveiled. Initially, the framework exclusively targeted closed-source models developed by entities like Anthropic and OpenAI. Nevertheless, White House officials anticipate that the framework will extend its purview to include open-source models in the forthcoming months. Consequently, when open-source models attain frontier capabilities on par with Anthropic's Mythos-level models and OpenAI's GPT-5.6, they too will fall under the framework's ambit and be subjected to safety testing before their public launch.
