On August 11th, OpenAI announced the launch of the GPT-5.6-Cyber model and expanded its cybersecurity initiative, Daybreak, aimed at providing vetted cybersecurity defenders with AI tools better suited for advanced security tasks. OpenAI stated that the move is intended to empower trusted defenders with cutting-edge AI capabilities before attackers can deploy autonomous cyberattacks at scale. The Daybreak program is divided into two tiers: Daybreak Blue offers access to GPT-5.6 Sol without system-level cybersecurity protection restrictions; Daybreak Red provides access to GPT-5.6-Cyber, specifically designed for exploit validation and advanced vulnerability research. Testing results show that GPT-5.6-Cyber can respond to 95% of advanced cybersecurity task requests, including exploit chain development, authentication bypass, and privilege escalation. OpenAI emphasized that high-risk capabilities will only be available to approved users, with additional controls and monitoring measures in place.
