A team of researchers from Stanford University has successfully developed a generative AI tool called Evo 2, which possesses the remarkable ability to craft new genomes—the fundamental hereditary blueprints of life encoded within DNA. Leveraging this innovative program, the research group has designed and fabricated 16 synthetic bacteriophages, diminutive viruses capable of infecting bacteria and, in certain instances, serving as an alternative to antibiotics in eradicating pathogenic bacteria. The findings from this groundbreaking study have been published in the esteemed journal Science.

Evo 2 underwent extensive training on a dataset comprising 2 million genetic sequences of bacteriophages, enabling it to generate thousands of potential genomes. From this vast pool, the researchers meticulously selected nearly 300 for artificial synthesis. Ultimately, 16 bacteriophages were verified to exhibit biological activity within the laboratory setting. Notably, these newly engineered bacteriophages demonstrated superior efficacy in eliminating the common microorganism Escherichia coli compared to their naturally occurring counterparts.
