The U.S. federal government is set to inject $5 billion, in partnership with 15 federal agencies, to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) in overcoming scientific hurdles, including pinpointing the root causes of chronic diseases and expediting the drug development process. Project teams will gain access to a wealth of scientific research assets housed within the Department of Energy. The Trump administration had previously outlined intentions to overhaul the distribution of research funds, aiming to bolster support for independent researchers and the application of AI technologies. However, these efforts were met with legal limitations. With an extensive repository of scientific research data at its disposal, the U.S. federal government sees this initiative as a prime opportunity for AI model training. Furthermore, Microsoft has pledged to contribute $40 million worth of AI computing resources over the ensuing three years to bolster this ambitious endeavor.
