On July 22, the Wall Street Journal reported that AMD and Anthropic have struck a multi-billion-dollar deal centered on AI server collaboration. Under the terms of this agreement, beginning in the first half of 2027, Anthropic will purchase up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's cutting-edge Instinct MI450 chips for its data centers. Furthermore, Anthropic intends to lease a portion of this computing power via major cloud service providers or emerging cloud vendors. The agreement also specifies that AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic once the latter achieves certain computing power deployment milestones. This investment marks AMD's inaugural foray into providing capital to an AI company. The CEO of AMD expressed that the company has long aspired to be a pivotal partner in Anthropic's infrastructure, and the engineering teams from both entities have been working together for some time now.
