South Korea Steps Up Development of State-of-the-Art AI Models and Broadens Infrastructure

On the 3rd, the Vice Minister of South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT announced that the South Korean government is strategically revamping its plans for constructing an autonomous AI foundational model. It will also spearhead a large-scale initiative centered on AI infrastructure, embodied AI (physical AI), and the enhancement of autonomous model capabilities. In a bid to ascend to the ranks of the top three AI superpowers worldwide, South Korea has significantly boosted its AI budget to KRW 9.9 trillion this year, marking a threefold increase from the previous year. The government intends to ramp up the development of AI data centers, with a target to reach a capacity of 8.4 gigawatts by 2029 and a further 10 gigawatts by 2035. Moreover, the government has set an ambitious goal to lead the world in embodied AI by 2030 and is actively promoting the 'AI for All' initiative, ensuring that AI services are within reach for every citizen.
