Citing unnamed government sources, The Korea Economic Daily revealed that South Korea is contemplating the use of roughly 5 trillion won in extra tax revenue, which stems from the thriving semiconductor industry, to financially back the development of homegrown artificial intelligence (AI) models. South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT is deliberating over the utilization of this tax income to acquire approximately 10,000 NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPU modules and to attract AI experts. In a bid to rival global models, the ministry is weighing the option of focusing GPU allocation on a single team to construct state-of-the-art AI models, as opposed to spreading them across various research and development entities. Nevertheless, the South Korean government clarified that it has not yet conducted an assessment of a supplementary budget, nor has it made a decision on whether to promote the development of cutting-edge AI models via large-scale GPU purchases.
