UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on governments worldwide to strengthen artificial intelligence (AI) governance, emphasizing that in the absence of shared rules, the faster AI develops, the less influence governments and the public will have over its outcomes. Previously, the United Nations established an 'Independent International Scientific Panel on AI' composed of 40 eminent individuals, which released its first assessment report. The report has been submitted to governments and made available to the public. It states that if used properly, AI could become a powerful driver of development, accelerating global progress in areas such as health, eradicating hunger, education, and climate, while also highlighting its potential harms.
