On July 1, 2026, Google unveiled a new functionality called 'Gemini Spark' for the macOS iteration of the Gemini application. This innovative feature empowers the AI assistant to directly interact with users' local files and automate desktop tasks. Following the update, a dedicated Spark tab appears in the sidebar of the Gemini Mac app, enabling users to grant Spark access to specific folders and revoke those permissions whenever they wish. Leveraging the capabilities of Gemini 3.5 Flash and Antigravity, Spark facilitates a range of operations, including organizing local files, extracting invoice amounts, generating budget sheets. It also seamlessly integrates with third-party applications such as Google Tasks, Keep, Canva, and Dropbox. Moreover, Spark provides real-time information tracking, multi-step cross-device commands (which will be available in the future), and custom Model Context Protocol (MCP) access. At present, this feature is exclusively accessible for testing to AI Ultra subscribers based in the United States and does not yet support cross-device interaction. Nonetheless, the capability to access Mac local data via composite commands on mobile devices is set to be introduced shortly.
