At the Build Developer Conference 2026, Microsoft unveiled its decision to rebrand the WinUI 3 framework as simply WinUI, urging developers to leverage this framework for crafting high-performance native applications tailored for Windows 11. This strategic shift is designed to mitigate the influence of subpar apps built on Web technologies, which have proliferated on Windows 11, marking a departure from Microsoft's prior embrace of such technologies. This announcement aligns with Microsoft's internal Windows K2 system overhaul initiative, which prioritizes enhancing system stability, optimizing memory usage, and refining the development environment. To facilitate this transition, Microsoft has formed a dedicated team to spearhead the creation of native apps and overhaul essential system components, including the Start menu and File Explorer. Additionally, Microsoft has bolstered its support for DataGrid and Charting controls, and incorporated AI-driven tools to streamline the development and optimization processes for WinUI apps.
