On May 28, 2026, OpenAI issued an official announcement stating that the o3 model will be formally phased out from ChatGPT on August 26. Concurrently, the GPT-4.5 model will be taken offline on June 27, leaving users with a mere 30-day window for transition. Presently, access to these two models is restricted to manual selection by paying subscribers and they are no longer set as the default choices. In the meantime, GPT-5.5 has emerged as OpenAI's most advanced publicly accessible flagship model, with GPT-5.5 Instant also assuming the role of the new default model for ChatGPT since May 5. Furthermore, the development of GPT-5.6 is progressing rapidly, with a new internal checkpoint already having been rolled out.
