On May 28, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk disclosed on Thursday that SpaceX and Anthropic have finalized a lease agreement for the Colossus AI training data center cluster. The initial lease term is a mere six months, though there is potential for extension over several years. Musk clarified that SpaceX has not entered into a multi-year lease commitment, though such an option remains open for the future. Earlier in the year, SpaceX and Anthropic entered into a long-term agreement. Under this agreement, Anthropic agreed to pay $1.25 billion monthly for access to the computing power of the Colossus and Colossus II data center clusters, both located in Memphis, Tennessee. The agreement was initially intended to remain valid until May 2029. However, SpaceX noted in a regulatory filing last week that both parties retain the right to terminate the agreement with a 90-day notice period. Notably, the filing did not reference the six-month lease term. Musk further elaborated that the actual agreement is an 180-day lease contract. Following this period, either party can terminate the agreement, provided they give a 90-day notice. He assured that a reasonable exit strategy would be provided but also mentioned that, in scenarios where computing resources are exceptionally scarce, SpaceX might need to reclaim these resources at some juncture. Additionally, according to SpaceX's IPO application documents, its AI business unit reported revenue of $818 million for the March quarter. However, it also incurred an operating loss of approximately $2.5 billion.
