Anthropic expects its second-quarter revenue to reach $10.9 billion, more than doubling from $4.8 billion in the first quarter, and to achieve an operating profit of $559 million for the first time. Its quarterly revenue growth rate has surpassed Zoom's performance during the pandemic and Google and Facebook's performance prior to their IPOs. This data was disclosed during its ongoing funding round, which may value the company higher than OpenAI. Anthropic's explosive sales growth is primarily driven by widespread adoption of its programming tools by enterprises, while its Claude AI model has also garnered significant attention for its agent task capabilities. Although Anthropic previously anticipated achieving full-year profitability only by 2028 and might not sustain profitability throughout the year (operating profit includes the cost of training new models but excludes equity incentive expenses), with ongoing business expansion and improved operational efficiency, its cost per dollar of computing power is expected to drop from 71 cents in the first quarter to 56 cents this quarter. Anthropic primarily uses Google and Amazon chips, which are less expensive than Nvidia's, and adopts a more conservative data center spending strategy compared to OpenAI. Additionally, its consumer business is smaller, eliminating the need to subsidize a large number of free users. However, differences in revenue accounting practices between Anthropic and OpenAI (Anthropic counts sales through cloud partners as revenue, while OpenAI does not), along with Anthropic's lack of transparency as a private company, make direct comparisons challenging. Furthermore, Anthropic was previously labeled a security risk by the White House for refusing a Department of Defense request, but relations have since improved. Currently, Anthropic's computing resources are under pressure, and it has signed new data center agreements in recent weeks (including a partnership with SpaceX) to expand capacity. Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX are racing toward public listings, with valuations expected to exceed $1 trillion.
