Microsoft-owned GitHub announced that its AI programming tool, GitHub Copilot, will shift from a fixed-quota subscription model to a usage-based billing model starting June 1, 2026, introducing the GitHub AI Credits mechanism. The new billing model will calculate consumption based on a combination of input, output, and cached tokens processed by the model, with specific rates aligned with the public API pricing of each model. The base subscription price remains unchanged, but the included benefits will be converted into an equivalent amount of AI Credits, with enterprise users able to share quotas. GitHub is also offering enterprise users a three-month promotional quota and introducing a billing preview feature.
