Microsoft has clarified that it has not abandoned plans to build smart agent experiences in Windows 11, with taskbar-level AI agent functionality progressing as scheduled. Users will be able to directly invoke various AI agents, including third-party ones, directly from the taskbar in the future. However, these features will be optional and not enabled by default. Microsoft has made it clear that AI agents will require user consent to access personal files and will support customizable permissions per agent to alleviate user concerns about privacy breaches. Despite this, Microsoft still warns of risks such as AI agent hallucinations, unpredictable behavior, and susceptibility to new types of attacks, and has implemented measures like independent accounts and isolated workspaces for management and control.
