On April 15, the European Commission released a communique, presenting a supplementary statement of objections to Meta. It preliminarily determined that Meta, following its policy modification to limit third-party AI assistants' access to WhatsApp, continued to contravene EU antitrust regulations. The Commission plans to mandate Meta to reinstate the access of third-party AI assistants to WhatsApp.

The roots of this incident can be traced back to October 15, 2025. On this day, Meta updated the business terms of WhatsApp, completely barring third-party general AI assistants from accessing the platform from January 15, 2026, while keeping only its proprietary Meta AI. On December 4, 2025, the European Commission launched an investigation into this matter. Subsequently, on February 9, 2026, it issued the first statement of objections. In response, on March 4, Meta lifted the ban but introduced a fee framework. However, after thorough evaluation, the EU concluded that this new policy was essentially on a par with the original ban, as it still posed a hindrance to market competition.
