Today, Stanford HAI published a comprehensive 423-page report that offers a panoramic view of the global AI industry. The report highlights that the performance gap between AI models from China and the United States has significantly diminished, with models from both nations frequently vying for the top spots in mainstream benchmark tests. As of March 2026, U.S. models maintained only a slim 2.7% lead. The United States continues to lead in the quantity of top-tier models, the number of high-quality patents, and investment levels. Meanwhile, China stands out in terms of paper publications, total patents, and the deployment of industrial robots. The adoption of AI technology is rapidly accelerating, with generative AI achieving a 53% usage rate within just three years. Furthermore, 88% of organizations globally are now utilizing AI. However, the development of AI is not without its challenges, as it is accompanied by high energy consumption and environmental costs. Additionally, assessment systems and governance capabilities are lagging behind, with notable issues in safety, regulation, and other critical areas.
