Last Friday, the European Commission announced that it is evaluating whether to designate OpenAI's ChatGPT as an "extra-large online search engine" under the Digital Services Act (DSA). According to OpenAI's report, the monthly active users of ChatGPT in the EU have surpassed the 45 million threshold specified by the DSA, and relevant authorities are currently verifying and assessing this data. In the future, large language models may fall under the purview of DSA regulation, though each case will require individual analysis. Earlier, Germany's Handelsblatt reported that ChatGPT would be subject to DSA regulation, which would entail stricter content review and transparency requirements.
