On April 14, The Wall Street Journal reported that the California home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman came under attack last week when a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the property. According to court filings, the suspect, Daniel Moreno-Gama, was found in possession of an “anti-AI” manifesto that listed the names of several AI company CEOs and outlined the potential existential risks posed by artificial intelligence to humanity. After targeting Altman’s residence, Gama allegedly vandalized the entrance of OpenAI’s headquarters before being apprehended by law enforcement.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident. Gama now faces charges including attempted arson, attempted property destruction with explosives, and possession of unregistered firearms. The case has sparked widespread discussion about the rise of radical opposition to AI technology and those who develop it.
