Several mainstream media outlets and platforms have banned the Internet Archive's 'Wayback Machine' tool to prevent AI companies from scraping copyrighted content for model training. Ironically, some of these media outlets have previously benefited from this tool. Currently, at least 23 mainstream news websites have implemented restrictive measures, such as complete blocking or API filtering. Over a hundred active journalists, along with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), have expressed support for the 'Wayback Machine,' deeming it indispensable. Publishers, however, argue that AI companies' use of data for training violates copyright laws. The head of the Internet Archive points out that locking away public web content will undermine society's ability to access historical truths and conduct public oversight, potentially leading to the loss of early digital historical records.
