The artificial intelligence firm MiniMax has declared that its newest model, M2.7, will be open-source. However, the atypical open-source license it has chosen has triggered a substantial uproar within the open-source community. The license clearly forbids any commercial utilization of the model unless MiniMax grants written consent. In essence, other enterprises that aim to implement M2.7 and offer services externally are required to secure authorization first. This action has stirred up controversy because, under the terms of this license, the very essence and value of open-sourcing are significantly undermined. The sole unrestricted use scenario is for developers to deploy the model on their own. Yet, when taking into account the immense computational power demands of the model, personal deployment becomes nearly unfeasible.
