Japanese media sources have reported that a consortium of leading Japanese companies, including SoftBank, NEC, Honda, and Sony, have banded together to establish a new entity named 'Japan AI Foundation Model Development'. Each of these founding members holds an equal 10% stake in the new venture. The company has set its sights on recruiting around 100 AI developers to fuel its ambitious projects.

In this collaborative effort, SoftBank and NEC will take the lead in developing foundational AI models, leveraging their technological prowess. Meanwhile, Honda will channel its resources into applying AI technologies in cutting-edge fields such as autonomous driving, where AI can revolutionize vehicle safety and efficiency. Sony, on the other hand, will explore AI applications in robotics, gaming, and semiconductors, areas where it already boasts significant expertise and market presence.

Additionally, the venture will enjoy the support of minority shareholders like Nippon Steel and Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, further bolstering its financial and strategic capabilities. One of the key objectives of this new company is to make the AI models it develops accessible to a broad spectrum of Japanese companies. This means that even firms that are not investors in the venture will be able to customize and deploy these AI models effectively, democratizing access to advanced AI technologies and fostering innovation across various industries.
