On April 9, Mozilla released an article lambasting Microsoft for its coercive promotion of Copilot within the Windows 11 system, a move that severely curtails user choice. Despite Microsoft's subsequent strategy shift—eliminating certain Copilot menu entries—Mozilla contends that this adjustment was driven not by a genuine concern for user experience, but rather by Microsoft's self-serving commercial motives.
Mozilla highlighted that, over the past year, Microsoft has resorted to forced installations and has persistently employed deceptive design patterns (often referred to as "dark patterns") and covert distribution tactics to erode user autonomy. The aggressive promotion of Copilot is merely an extension of its monopolistic practices.
In stark contrast, the Firefox browser upholds the principle of "AI aligning with user intent." Mozilla argues that Microsoft's methodology stifles fair competition within the industry and advocates for the creation of an internet ecosystem where users retain full control over their devices and data.
