Microsoft has announced plans to revise the terms of use for Copilot, following a widely circulated social media post that highlighted controversy over the phrase “for entertainment purposes only.” This wording originated from Copilot’s initial launch as a supplementary feature for Bing search, but it no longer aligns with the tool’s current applications. Many users interpreted the disclaimer as a lack of confidence in Microsoft’s flagship AI product, despite public endorsements of its capabilities by the company’s CEO.
Notably, Microsoft’s broader service agreements for AI-related tools do not include this “entertainment-only” clause. Similarly, user agreements from competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Meta avoid such phrasing, though they also employ legal safeguards to limit liability.
As generative AI technology evolves, legal disputes over accountability for chatbot-generated content are on the rise. OpenAI, for instance, faces multiple lawsuits addressing this issue, reflecting broader industry challenges in defining responsibility amid rapid innovation.
