Following OpenAI's announcement regarding the discontinuation of its Sora video generation application, Google made a significant move on March 31, reaffirming its commitment to advancing video generation technology by introducing a new video model—Veo 3.1 Lite. Positioned as a beginner-friendly iteration, this model facilitates seamless text-to-video and image-to-video conversions, delivering outputs in both 720p and 1080p resolutions. It accommodates two aspect ratios: the standard horizontal 16:9 and the vertical 9:16 format, ensuring versatility in video creation. The generation speed of this model is on par with that of Veo 3.1 Fast, ensuring efficient performance. Developers have the flexibility to tailor video durations to 4, 6, or 8 seconds, with costs adjusted accordingly. Notably, the operational expenses associated with Veo 3.1 Lite are less than half those of Veo 3.1 Fast, which will also undergo a price reduction effective April 7. Google underscored that the primary objective of this new model is to diminish the entry barriers for developers seeking to integrate video generation capabilities, particularly catering to scenarios demanding high throughput. Starting from today, Veo 3.1 Lite will be accessible to developers through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, marking a significant step forward in democratizing video generation technology.
