According to a report by Business Insider, Amazon is developing a new type of retail store through its internal 'Project Kobe' that combines Walmart-style supercenters with robotic warehouses, further advancing into the grocery retail sector and challenging Walmart's market dominance. Currently in the early stages of development, the first store is expected to open in Orlando Park, a suburb of Chicago, by the end of 2027. Spanning approximately 225,000 square feet, the store will offer 250,000 products, nearly double the inventory of a typical Walmart store. The store's core highlight is the integration of an automated fulfillment center at the rear, utilizing the AutoStore robotic storage system and AI tools to plan product categories, enabling integrated in-store shopping, pickup, and delivery services. However, the plan also faces challenges such as high fulfillment costs, the need for manual picking of certain products, and future expansion constraints due to refrigeration and space limitations.
