A ruling announced on Thursday revealed that the Rome Court has overturned a €15 million (approximately $17 million) privacy fine imposed on ChatGPT developer OpenAI by the Italian Data Protection Authority. The court has not yet provided reasons for its decision. OpenAI welcomed the ruling and reiterated its commitment to respecting user privacy. The fine, initially imposed in December 2024 on grounds of alleged unlawful use of personal data, had already been appealed by OpenAI at the time.
