Based on a Chartbeat data report published by Axios, Google's introduction of the AI Overview feature in its search engine has delivered a substantial setback to publishers. Over the past two years, small publishers have witnessed a staggering 60% decline in referral traffic from Google. Meanwhile, medium-sized and large publishers have experienced decreases of 47% and 22%, respectively. Between December 2024 and December 2025, the total number of pageviews referred by search engines dropped by 34%, and traffic from Google's Discover channel contracted by 15%. Although some publishers have made efforts to optimize their websites for AI chatbots, these sources still contribute to less than 1% of their overall traffic. Users mainly visit these sites to verify the accuracy of AI-generated content rather than engage in in-depth interactions.

The total global traffic for publishers has only seen a minor decline of 6%, suggesting that large organizations are successfully navigating the transition by leveraging channels such as email newsletters and direct visits. However, small publishers are grappling with enormous challenges in cultivating independent audiences and are at significant risk of being marginalized in the evolving digital landscape.
