On March 17, a report from Cailian Press revealed that Encyclopædia Britannica, along with its subsidiary Merriam-Webster, has initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI in the Federal Court of Manhattan, New York. The plaintiffs accuse OpenAI of infringing upon their copyrights by unauthorizedly utilizing approximately 100,000 online articles, encyclopedia entries, and dictionary definitions to train its AI model, ChatGPT. This action, they claim, has diverted web traffic away from their official platforms and encroached upon their trademark rights. Consequently, they are demanding financial restitution and a court order to halt the ongoing infringement.
