Based on a report from The Information, OpenAI has scrapped its initial idea of incorporating an 'instant checkout' feature within ChatGPT. Instead, it now redirects users to third-party retail apps or websites to finalize their purchases. This decision signifies a notable pivot in its AI-powered e-commerce strategy. Earlier, OpenAI had teamed up with platforms such as Shopify and Etsy to integrate shopping functionalities directly into ChatGPT, aiming to offer a seamless, AI-driven shopping journey from start to finish. Yet, real-world user interactions showed that although many users leveraged ChatGPT for product exploration and price comparisons, only a minuscule fraction proceeded to make payments. The majority of consumers still favored completing their orders through their personal account systems and on interfaces they were already comfortable with.

Furthermore, OpenAI encountered technical and compliance hurdles, including the challenge of synchronizing inventory, pricing, and logistics data in real time. Additionally, the company had not yet set up a mechanism for calculating and remitting sales taxes, and was grappling with intricate risk management demands associated with payment security and fraud prevention.

An OpenAI spokesperson explained that the revised strategy is designed to facilitate smoother transactions for both users and merchants within their current settings. The firm will continue its partnership with Stripe to develop the Agentic Commerce Protocol, but the emphasis has now shifted towards bolstering external checkout procedures instead of constructing an autonomous e-commerce platform.
