On March 4, according to The Information, an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that the company is considering deploying its artificial intelligence technology across all classified networks of NATO. Previously, OpenAI had announced that it would begin providing AI services to the U.S. Department of Defense on its classified networks. In response to criticism, including from some employees, that the agreement with the Defense Department could allow the military to use its AI in violation of the company's ban, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman defended the company at an employee meeting. On Monday, OpenAI updated its Defense Department agreement to include more specific terms explicitly prohibiting its AI from being used for domestic surveillance, including information obtained through commercial means. Altman is expected to speak at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in San Francisco on Thursday.
