Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 2 - The OpenAI Research Center (OpenAI), headquartered in the United States, declared on February 28 that it had entered into a pact with the US Department of Defense. This agreement involves the deployment of its artificial intelligence models on the Pentagon's classified networks. Just a day prior, another US firm had severed its ties with the Pentagon, citing differences regarding the extent of AI applications. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, emphasized that the collaboration adheres to the principles that AI should not be employed for "domestic mass surveillance" and that the decision to use force must remain a human responsibility, with "safety safeguards" firmly in place. Nevertheless, Altman stopped short of banning the use of AI tools in fully autonomous weapon systems. Originally founded as a non-profit entity, OpenAI has undergone a gradual transformation into a for-profit venture in recent years. In 2024, it began loosening the constraints on the application of its technology in the military sector. Earlier this year, OpenAI also took part in a tech initiative aimed at developing voice-controlled autonomous drone swarms for military purposes. On February 27, OpenAI proudly announced the successful completion of a staggering $110 billion financing round, with the company now valued at an impressive $730 billion.
