Google recently announced the introduction of new Gemini-based AI features for its Google Translate app on Android and iOS, aimed at enhancing the understanding of idioms, colloquial expressions, and context, thereby improving the naturalness and appropriateness of translations. The new features include an 'Understand' tab (which explains the meaning and usage scenarios of expressions), a 'Ask' tab (supporting follow-up questions in natural language), and a 'Real-Time Translation Beta' (which enables simultaneous interpretation through headphones, preserving the original speaker's tone, emphasis, and rhythm). Currently, these features are available in the United States and India, supporting translation between 20 languages. The real-time translation feature initially supports over 70 languages, with support for the web version to follow later.
