Last month, OpenAI unveiled its plan to incorporate advertisements into both the free and Plus versions of ChatGPT. This month, the company has commenced displaying these ads to users in the United States, a decision that has sparked criticism from competitors like Anthropic. Tech media outlets recently interviewed OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, regarding the company's advertising strategy. He emphasized that the introduction of ads is a phased approach that necessitates striking a balance between safeguarding user privacy and maintaining trust. Lightcap believes that well-placed, high-quality ads can actually enhance the overall user experience. He urged the public to allow a few months to pass in order to properly assess the impact of this new initiative. He refrained from disclosing whether OpenAI intends to extend its advertising business to markets beyond the United States. Earlier, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, had responded to Anthropic's Super Bowl ad, labeling it as "dishonest." According to reports, OpenAI's ad rate, (translated as 'quote' for context) stands at $60 per thousand impressions, with advertisers required to commit to a minimum expenditure of $200,000. Presently, Shopify has enabled its merchants to place ads on ChatGPT, with early adopters including Target and other notable brands.
