According to sources familiar with the matter, Alphabet's Google plans to test a new way of displaying search results in the European market by adding display positions for competitors in vertical searches such as hotels, flights, and restaurants, to avoid heavy fines from the EU for favoring its own services. Since being accused of violating the Digital Markets Act in March last year, Google has proposed several rectification plans, but none have been implemented due to insufficient efforts deemed by competitors. The core of this new plan is to display both vertical search services and Google results on the search results page, and to display the top-ranked vertical search engines by default. The initial coverage will be accommodation searches, later expanding to flights and other services. If the plan meets the requirements, it is expected to ease tensions with the EU; otherwise, Google may face fines of up to 10% of its global annual revenue.
