Two years prior, during an event at Harvard University, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unequivocally expressed his aversion to incorporating advertisements into ChatGPT. He held the belief that ads would undermine user trust in the product and regarded advertising as a measure of last resort for the business model. Nevertheless, as OpenAI has poured substantial investments into computing power and data centers, it has found itself under financial strain. Consequently, the company has started to explore new avenues for revenue generation, with advertising emerging as one such option. Recently, OpenAI has commenced displaying ads on ChatGPT, primarily targeting free users and ChatGPT Go subscribers. In contrast, users who pay $20 or $200 per month are still able to enjoy an ad-free experience. Altman underscored that the presence of ads would not compromise the objectivity of ChatGPT's responses and that user conversation content would continue to be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
