Beijing-based lawyer Huang Guigeng filed a lawsuit against Beijing Baidu Netcom Science and Technology Co., Ltd. for infringement of his reputation rights. This action was taken after Baidu's AI system generated severe and false negative information about him, including criminal allegations such as threatening judges and forging seals. This erroneous information was subsequently disseminated to his clients and family members, causing him significant distress and financial losses. Huang is seeking 1 million yuan in compensation for the damage to his professional reputation and an additional 50,000 yuan for the mental anguish he has endured. On November 2, 2025, the Beijing Haidian District People's Court officially accepted the case. The first trial commenced on February 6. Baidu argued that AI hallucinations represent a temporary challenge in the product development process and that the company merely provides neutral technical services without any subjective intent to harm, thus not constituting an infringement. Huang Guigeng, however, contended that 'AI hallucinations' cannot serve as a valid excuse to evade liability and that the principle of 'technical neutrality' does not absolve the company of its duty to review content. The court adjourned without proceeding to the debate phase on the day of the trial.
