Dario Amodei, the Chief Executive Officer of the U.S.-based AI startup Anthropic, has sounded the alarm, stating that artificial intelligence is poised to wreak havoc on the job market, resulting in what he describes as "extraordinary pain." In a recently published 20,000-word treatise, Amodei underscores that the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence have not been given the due attention they deserve. He emphasizes that its impact on the employment landscape will far outstrip that of any previous technological upheaval.
Amodei highlights that the breakneck speed at which AI is advancing far outpaces that of past technological shifts. This rapid progression makes it incredibly challenging for individuals to keep pace, whether it involves adapting their work methodologies or transitioning to entirely new career paths.
Projecting into the future, Amodei predicts that within the next 1 to 5 years, AI could potentially replace as much as 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs, leading to a surge in unemployment rates. In light of these projections, he urgently calls on governments worldwide to step up and implement proactive measures to mitigate this looming crisis. One such proposal he puts forward is the adoption of a progressive tax system.
